Updated: Mar 5, 2023

Colour: white

Material: alloy steel

Size: 28 x 28 x 28 cm

Weight: 7.78 Kg

Summary

We love the Brother 3034DWT and, in our opinion, its probably the best overall package and machine of all that we have reviewed!! This is a very well designed, good looking machine which works smoothly, is reliable, robust and sits firmly on the work surface.

As well as the handy trim trap (for catching off cuts), a free arm for tubular stitching and the extended side table (which is such a worth while add-on to stop fabric drag misalignment as you create stitches), the Brother 3034DWT overlocker comes with a great package of accessories and even 3 additional specialist presser feet.

This machine is easy enough to thread up, as many overlockers aren’t, and you will never have to fear threading up again! This is one of the biggest issues that puts people off using their overlockers, but this definitely won’t be the case with this machine!

It is a perfect machine for a complete beginner to learn on and to use and it comes with thread so you can start trying it out almost immediately! It has so many features and accessories that it will be more than enough to keep you happy for years of great overlocking but you won’t feel overwhelmed with it either.

Its certainly not the most expensive on the market and is, for the generous package that comes with this machine as well as the great engineering, simply the best value for money around!

If you are in any doubt about which machine to purchase then we would recommend the Brother 3034DWT without hesitation! You won’t be disappointed!

Here's a little more details about the Brother 3034DWT and what you get for your money:

Guarantee

This machine comes with the excellent Brother 3 year guarantee. You will need to keep the box and return the accessories should you need to return this machine (although we don't think you will want to).

Generous Pack of Accessories

The Brother 3034DWT comes with an extremely generous pack of accessories including an extension table, tweezers, a lint brush, a needle pack, 4 thread nets, 4 spool caps, a hexagonal driver, a trim trap, a machine dust cover and a foot control.

The machine is helpfully designed such that key accessories can neatly be stored in the opening cover for the loopers so you have easy access.

Instruction Manual

This machine comes with a good instruction manual which is very readable and helpful and definitely worth taking the time to read when you get it. It also comes with a great DVD which explains use of the machine and is worth watching (if you have a DVD player).

Threading is Easy – No Fear Here!

This machine comes with ready threaded white thread to get you started and so you can have a quick practice very quickly. Don’t immediately pull this thread out but tie it to the thread colour you want to use and pull your thread through the machine. Although in truth it’s not a problem if you do because it’s actually very easy to learn to thread this machine yourself.

There’s plenty to help you to easily learn to thread the Brother 3034DWT. The manual is very readable, the dvd is excellent, there is a colour coded thread path with straightforward diagram on the machine and, of course, it comes pre-threaded. This is a machine where fear of threading will not prevent you from using the machine: fear of threading is so often a stumbling block for would-be overlockers!

Specialist Presser Feet

We thinks it’s great that this machine also comes with additional specialist feet: a blind stitch foot, a piping foot and a gathering foot.

There is a Knife

This machine comes with a knife to trim while you overlock. The knife can be folded away if you don’t want to trim and you can easily adjust the width of fabric that the knife cuts. This is more important than many realise as cut too much and you have empty stitches, cut too little and the fabric starts to fold within the stitch. The ideal cutting width is different for different fabric types. With the Brother 3034DWT its very easy to adjust this to perfect cutting length.

The Extended Table

We love this! This is such a helpful feature and not common on overlockers. It helps you to control the fabric through the machine and prevents the sideways drag which can throw your stitches (and your cutting) out of line. When you are cutting as you sew its important to get it right first time!

Stitches

The quality of the stitches is very good and you can easily adjust the width and length of the stitches.

Trim Trap

What a great design feature this is!! The fabric off cuts are collected rather than just fall on the work surface. This is enormously helpful as overlockers do produce quite a lot of fluff and waste, more than normal sewing machines, because of their cutting function.

Free Arm

This machine has a helpful additional feature of a free arm for easy tubular or circular stitching such as sleeves and trouser legs. For the home stitcher this is worthwhile.

Differential Feed

The differential feed is easy to adjust to help you cope with overlocking a wide range of fabrics including more difficult ones! The differential feed can also be used for other functions such as gathering, for example.

Disadvantages

Its really hard to fault this machine as it does almost everything you could want!

The worst we can say is that the DVD is of no use if you don’t have a DVD player, but then the instructions are good, its easy to use and thread so that is hardly a problem.

The lint brush is a little on the small side, but to be fair its pretty similar to the brush which comes with most overlockers. Keeping an overlocker clean is important as they are more prone to a build up of fluff and lint which, when mixed with oil can seriously impair the functioning of the machine over time.
