Summary

This is an entry level machine which does basic overlocking and it’s a relatively low price. As it is basic it is perhaps not the easiest or best machine for a beginner to use and probably wouldn’t be great for someone with more advanced skills who would want something more heavy duty either.

In our opinion this machine somehow has a more flimsy feel to it, the presser foot not lift is unusual (although you would normally start overlocking with the presser foot down anyway, it’s nice to have the option to lift when handling bulky fabrics) and we thought it was a little louder and noisy than some of the smooth overlockers on the market. In our opinion it’s also not the best looking machine out there, if aesthetics are important to you, this won’t score highly.

The inch to cm conversion diagram on the front of the machine is a nice touch! We like the automatic cut out switch when the lower door is open, has a free arm and combing the differential and stitch adjustment is clean design.

Overall though, sorry to say the Necchi Millepunti DF4 isn’t a favourite with us. We have Necchi sewing machines which we love, but this overlocker just wouldn’t be our choice in our opinion.

Looks like this machine used to be called the Siruba HSO 747d

Stitches

Stitch width can be adjusted from 3 to 5.7mm wide and adjusted in length from 1 to 5mm. There are 4 options with 3 or 4 threads and you can use either one or two needles but unfortunately this machine does not give you a 2 thread option. Stitching was OK but fiddly.

Threading

The Necchi Millepunti DF4 comes ready threaded with 4 white thread cones and a generous amount of thread is provided, so you can properly try your overlocker out as soon as you get it without having to worry about threading just yet!

Colour Coded Thread Diagram

There is a colour coded threading diagram in the machine which is clear enough although the colour diagram does not have the thread numbers on it. It’s not difficult to see exactly which thread path is which but the diagram in the manual does not have colours in it. You can work it which is which but for nervous threaders and for those who panic about diagrams (and there are many) it’s a shame colours weren’t put in the manual or numbers weren’t put on the thread path diagram.

It is easy to get access to lower loopers to allow threading, although we think threading on this machine is a little more complicate than some and we can see why some might be nervous to thread this machine.

There is no DVD included of how to thread this machine. That’s a shame as although some people can no longer play DVDs, for many watching a video of someone threading and using the machine gives them lost of confidence.

Sleeve Arm Facility

The Necchi Millepunt DF4 comes with a sleeve arm function for tubular items such as sleeves and trouser legs, where you need to stitch all the way around. This is a helpful function.

Rolled Hem Function

There is a rolled hem function which is fairly easy to change to. You don’t have to change the needle plate / presser foot, as unusually the function is actually incorporated in the main foot.

Differential

Differential adjustments can be made whilst overlocking, to adjust for stretch or gathered fabric.

We like the design feature that the differential feed adjustment and the stitch length adjustment are both on a combined dial on the left hand side of the machine. The inner dial adjusts the stitch and the outer dial adjusts the differential. This gives the machine a cleaner look without lots of dials.

We also like the fact that there are letters rather than numbers around the differential dial: G, N and S. Setting G is for Gathering, setting N for Normal overlocking and setting S is for Stretch. This is such a helpful idea and takes away some of the fear many have of understanding all of an overlocker’s settings and what all the numbers mean.

Knife

There is a knife function where you want to trim as you overlock. This can be disengaged and positioned not to cut if you prefer not.

Knife: Adjustable Cutting Position

We like it that you can also adjust the cutting width of the knife. If you remove the free arm there is a simple dial which shows whether the knife is set to cut at a wide (W) or narrow (N) position. Adjusting the knife cutting positions is an underrated feature we always look for as its important to cut the fabric to the correct length to exactly fill the stitch: cut too little and the fabric starts to curl inside the stitch, cut too much and the stitches appear empty.

Fabric Box

This machine has a front box attachment to catch fabric off cuts. This is helpful as anything that helps keep an overlocker waste, dust and lint free is important for the long term functioning of the machine.

Accessories

This machine comes with a generous bag of accessories including a standard foot, small lint brush, spare needles, a screw driver, allen key, 4 spool caps, 4 spool cone holders, quite long tweezers (the length helps), a spare upper blade, an accessory box, an electronic foot control, an instruction book, and a soft cover.

This machine does not come with an additional presser feet for special functions nor does it cone with a DVD to show you how to thread or use the machine. You have to purchase the specialist feet separately, but then this is an entry level, budget machine.

Safety Switch

We like this safety function! There is a safety switch which is deactivated when the front lower machine door is opened. So when you are touching or threading the inner mechanisms you cannot accidentally start the machine up and hurt or cut yourself. This is a great design feature and good if you are going to be working with children (needless to say, children should never be left unsupervised with an overlocker).

Negatives

No DVD

No 2 stitch option

Not the easiest to thread

A little bit flimsy and not the smoothest running overlocker.
