Summary

Well you certainly get plenty for your money with the Jaguar 489!! This machine would be ideal for a beginner because of its sheer ease of use but as its so robust and versatile so you won’t outgrow and it does almost everything you could want an overlocker to do!

It’s a very good looking machine, it feels solid and robust, it runs smoothly and it’s surprisingly quiet. It also turns out great quality accurate stitching, with stitches that are easy to adjust or fine tune, even when you’re actually in the middle of overlocking!

The Jaguar 489 really is very easy to thread up because you can access all parts of the thread path thanks to Jaguar's 180 degree opening (which means that both sides of the lower half of the machine open easily).

You certainly need never fear threading the Jaguar 489, and difficult threading has always been one of the main worries of anyone about to buy an overlocker!

It’s not a budget machine, it is a great investment and you will get excellent value for money and a machine that feels like its built to last. The Jaguar 489 is a machine you will certainly enjoy using!

Here are some more details about this great overlocker:

Stitch Quality

The Jaguar 489 produces excellent quality stitches with a broad stitch width and length range. There is a choice of 2, 3 or 4 stitching threads and there is also a useful rolled hem function. There is a dual feed differential to help you work with more difficult fabrics or more complicated overlocking projects.

The stitch per minute rate of 1,300 is fairly standard. Its easily controlled with a foot peddle.

Easy to Thread

While so many overlockers are sold as being easy to thread (and they are after some serious reading and concentration) this machine really is easy to thread! You won’t need to fiddle with the tweezers or specialist threading tools. It has a colour coded threading chart printed on the machine, there is a good manual, there is a DVD and it comes ready threaded to help you with the threading issues.

Instruction Manual and DVD

This machine comes with an easy to read and comprehensive instruction manual. It really is worth taking the time to read through the manual so you actually find out all the functions on this great machine. It also comes with an instruction DVD.

180 Degree Fully Opening

As with the 488, the Jaguar 489 has 180 degree opening, which means that both sides of the lower front open up, not just the right hand side as on traditional style overlockers. The opening mechanism is easy and this function really does give easy access to the thread pathway for the lower (looper) threads.

Another thing we like about the 180 degree opening is that you don’t end up struggling to get a needle or screw out of the machine that you drop into it. It’s a minor point but can be easily done and frustrating in the middle of a project.

Easy to Clean

The 180 degree dual sided opening also makes this machine easy to clean. Cleaning is important with an overlocker as cutting fabric and threads creates a build up of fluff, fibres and debris, far more than a normal sewing machine. When the debris mixes with oil from the machine it can create quite a build up which seriously impacts how the machine functions over time. Never underestimate the ability to properly clean an overlocker! With the Jaguar 489 you can easily access all the parts where a build up might occur.

Jaguar have also thought about cleaning and this machine comes with a lint tray.

The brush that comes with the machine is a little on the small side, although it does the job. This is the case with almost all overlockers.

Has a Knife to Cut Excess Fabric

This machine has a knife which trims the fabric for you as you work and the knife can be disengaged and folded away if you don’t want to cut.

The cutting width is adjustable so you can cut more away for thicker fabrics and less for finer fabrics and hence the fabric always perfectly reaches the inner edge of the stitch (without leaving an empty gap inside the stitch or the fabric being forced to fold over within the stitch).

Needles

We like that you don’t need special overlocker needles but you can use standard sewing machine needles.

Accessories

The Jaguar 489 comes with a great range of accessories including tweezers, a spanner, two screwdrivers (large and small), an oiler, a brush, spool disc, thread nets, two-thread converters, spool holders, spool caps, a set of needles, a tape measure, dust cover, a moving cutter.

A pack of specialist presser feet is not included, so if you want then you’ll have to buy them separately.

Good Tool Storage Design

The inner side of the right hand door is designed with an integrated storage compartment so you can store some of your tools here e.g. your lint brush, the needles pack and screwdriver.

Robust

This machine works well with thick fabrics or multi layered fabrics and tensions are easy to adjust giving an excellent finish.

LED Light

There is an LED light so you can easily see what you’re doing.

Good Looking Machine

Whilst we agree that functionality, durability and value for money might be most important than looks, if you're going to spend a lot of time sitting in-front of an overlocker it might as well be good to look at. This machine is a crisp, clean and neat design.

Disadvantages

The Jaguar 489 doesn’t come with additional specialist presser feet. So if you want specialist feet you will have to buy them separately.

There is no free arm for ease of tubular overlocking eg sleeves, trouser legs.

The DVD is only helpful if you can still play a DVD (many can’t anymore). The manual is very readable so you can get around this easily enough.

The cleaning brush is a little small, as is usually the case with overlockers and its a minor point. It will do the job but a bigger one might be easier.
